Historical Highlights:

18th Century Encampment-Located on Main Street at the Christ Reformed Church Green Space. Go back in time learn about life during the 1800's. Make candles, learn about flint and steel making, talk to Seneca Indians.

Reenactor PhotoMiddletown Heritage Hunt-Participate for great prizes in the Middletown Heritage Hunt. This scavenger hunt takes you and your family throughout town answering questions about period homes and historic people. Get your scavenger hunt forms at the Heritage Boothlocated in the front of Town Hall.

Historical Society House and Garden Tour-Visit the Middletown Historical Society and tour their 18th century home and garden. Hearth cooking will be demonstrated by local period cooking expert Sally Waltz, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The Historical Society is located at 305 West Main Street.

Civil War Medical Hospital-The Zion Lutheran Church was used as a hospital after the battle of Antietam. Come see the hospital re-created. Located on Main Street in the heart of downtown historic Middletown.

Signal Corps Association of Baltimore- Demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Did you know that the steeple of the Zion Lutheran Church was used as a signaling tower during the Civil War? Signal officers stood in the steeple and signaled towards Boonsboro and Frederick. Learn how signaling developed and how it was used.

Liberty Rifles- Meet the Liberty Rifles, a Union Infantry Camp. Located in the Christ Reformed Church green space along Main Street.

Middletown Historical Stage-Located at Willow Street this theater will run throughout the day featuring actors portraying significant historical figures or events from Middletown.

Keller Field Dedication-The Middletown High School proudly announces that the school's baseball field is being renamed Charlie Keller"Keller Field" in honor of the Keller brothers who graduated from the school and earned national recognition on the baseball field. All three brothers, Charlie, Hal and Hugh were baseball standouts at the University of Maryland and later each had significant contributions in professional ball. Charlie Keller was a New York Yankee. Read an article about Middletown's Keller brothers in the Frederick Gazzette. The dedication will take place during the Heritage Festival at 1:15 on Stage One in front of Middletown Valley Florist.

Visit with Jay Goodman and South Mountain View Alpacas. Learn about alpacas and how their wool is sheared and spun. A fun learning experience for all ages!

Visit the Middletown Fire Department Auxillary Breakfast on Heritage Morning for their Annual All You Can Eat Breakfast. From 7 am to 10 am.

Pet Contest. Contest time 2:15 at Stage 2 near Gladhill Furniture. Children's prizes and goodie bags for all participants. Sign up prior to contest beginning at 1:45 at Stage 2 or The Heritage Booth.

Heritage Parade. Beginning at 10:00 am, join the Middletown Community for the Heritage Parade! This event begins at School House Drive and goes through town on Main Street ending at Walnut Street. Come see marching bands, floats and entertaining local businesses and organizations. This year’s honorary Grand Marshall of the Heritage Parade is Ron Engle. A life-long resident of Frederick County and a Middletown Resident for 39 years, Mr. Engle represents community leadership and involvement.  Mr. Engle has taught in the Frederick County Public School System for 33 years, 27 of those years at Middletown High.  He was inducted into The Frederick County Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and was coach of the year numerous times throughout his career. Mr. Engle continues his love of teaching sports through his involvement with girls basketball programs in the Middletown schools.   The community wants to thank Mr. Engle and his wife, Dottie for their years of service and contribution to the Middletown community.

Children's Heritage Games. Located at the court yard next to The Main Cup Patio, children can come and try 18th century games such as The Game of Graces and Hoop Rolling. All activities are free.

The South Mountain Sutlers will be located in front of 308 West Main St. doing:

-Soap and candle making
-Learn about fur trading and trapping
-Wool dying and spinning
-Apple butter and Apple Sauce making
-Herb drying

To mark the 145th anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain and to emphasize the rich history of Middletown during this period a number of living history interpretations and demonstrations will be featured throughout the day. These will include:

  • Demonstration and interpretation of the use and firing of a 12 lb Napoleon Cannon by South Mountain State Battlefield staff. Learn about this cannon used during the Civil War. Interpretations and demonstrations will take place along Main Street in the Christ Reformed Church green space.
  • Union Infantry Camp by the Liberty Rifles
  • Signal Corps Association of Baltimore demonstrating the use of flag signaling during the battle
  • US Christian Commission Relief Support Group
  • A demonstration of a Civil War field hospital presented by the Middletown Zion Lutheran church and the Civil War Medical Museum

This year the Festival will feature a living history demonstration of an 18th Century Colonial Frontier Encampment. To emphasize the rich history of Middletown during this period a living history demonstration will feature:

  • 18th Century candle dipping and pouring
  • Flint & Steel fire making demonstrations
  • Colonial woodworking
  • Blacksmith demonstrations
  • Spinning and weaving
  • A Seneca Indian encampment and native American Interpretation
  • Demonstrations of cooking and clothing from the period
